The original French lyrics of “O.Canada” were written in 1880 as a nationalistic poem by Adolphe-Basile Routhier, a judge; it was set to music by a conspicuous French-Canadian composer of that time, Calixa Lavallée and was sung for the first time on June 24 1880 at a banquet in the Pavillion des Patineurs in Quebec City.
